19 of My Best Essential Oil Hacks!

Learning about Essential Oils for the first time can be a little overwhelming.
From Lavender to Helichrysum, each oil has a range of effective uses and possible recipes. To simplify your Essential Oil journey, I’ve created a cheat sheet of 19 Essential Oil hacks for everyday use!
Let's dive in!
Oil not dispensing? If your oil isn’t dispensing, it’s probably too thick (Vetiver is a good example of a thick oil). Try running the bottle under warm water to thin the oil out. Or simply pop it in your top or up your sleeve to warm it up naturally! Also, widen the dropper by inserting a pin or toothpick.
Dilution rate converter. Depending on the recipe, dilution rates may vary. Here’s how to convert. A 1% dilution rate equals to 5-6 drops of Essential Oil per 2 Tbsp (1 oz/ 30 ml) of carrier oil. The amount of carrier oil will always be the same, but the amount of Essential Oils will multiply by the dilution rate.
For example:
  • 3% dilution rate equals 15-18 drops of essential oil (5-6 multiplied by the dilution rate, which is 3) per 2 Tbsp of carrier oil.
  • 10% dilution rate equals 50-60 drops of essential oil (5-6 multiplied by the dilution rate, which is 10) per 2 Tbsp of carrier oil.

Have some empty EO bottles? There are plenty of creative ways to recycle empty EO bottles, the options are endless! My favourite ways are -
Put the empty bottles, lids and stoppers (disassemble) in a jar or Bi-Carb or Epsom salts. The leftover oil that you cannot get out will be absorbed into the salts or Bi-Carb. Use these for the bath (Epsom salts) or the Bicarb for cleaning! I use it sprinkled in my dishwasher for odours, in a bowl in the fridge for odours, or sprinkle some in your toilet or washing machine and add some white vinegar for a fizzy deep clean!
Limit sugar cravings. Gently inhale Peppermint, Smart & Sassy, Grapefruit or Cinnamon straight from the bottle to reduce your appetite.
Get rid of grease. Before washing your clothes, rub a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil to the stain.
Feel energized: Rub 2-3 diluted drops of Wild Orange Essential Oil to your palm and gently inhale for 30 seconds.
Enliven your body lotion: Drop 2-4 drops of Bergamot and 2-4 drops of Grapefruit to an unscented lotion base to add a natural aroma.
Carpet deodoriser: Add 3-5 drops of Ylang Ylang to a cotton ball and place in the bag of the vacuum. Or fill a jar with Bi-Carb soda and add a few drops of your favourite Essential Oil. Sprinkle over the carpet (a good way to do this is with one of those shakers used in cooking or on the top of cappuccinos), leave for an hour then vacuum up.
Bin deodoriser: Add 2-4 drops of Tea Tree and Lemon to a cotton ball and place at the bottom of the bin. Add 2 drops of Melaleuca (Tea Tree) and Lemon Essential Oil to a cotton ball and put the cotton ball at the bottom of your bin.  Lemon and Tea Tree will disinfect and deodorise, keeping your bin smelling fresh and clean!
Boost your toothpaste: Add 1 drop Rosemary and 1 drop Peppermint to 60ml's of natural toothpaste to help support healthy gums, give you an immunity boost, and fight bad breath. Wild Orange Essential Oil is also great for whitening the teeth.
Clean your microwave: Simply microwave a bowl or mug with about a cup of water and 5 drops of Lemongrass Essential Oil for about 3 minutes. Once the timer goes off, let the bowl or mug sit in the microwave for an additional 5 minutes, the steam will help soften the food inside the microwave. Carefully remove the hot cup of water and wipe your microwave clean easily.

Remove permanent marker: Scrub off permanent marker stains with Lemon Essential Oil. Lemon Essential Oil will remove crayon and permanent marker from the wall (be sure to test in an inconspicuous spot to make sure it doesn’t also remove or alter the finish of your paint).
Remove sticky residue: Use a couple of drops of Lemon Essential Oil to remove all kinds of sticky residue. Lemon Essential Oil can also be used to get rid of adhesive sticky messes like removing labels from bottles, unsticking stickers that your kids used to decorate your refrigerator, and removing chewing gum.
Drying your clothes: Get yourself some wool dryer balls and say goodbye to chemical-filled dryer sheets for good. Put your favourite Essential Oil on the dryer balls to scent your laundry. The wool dryer balls also cut your drying time by 50%. This really works!
Toilet freshener: Place 1-2 drops of Cypress Essential Oil inside your toilet paper roll. Every time the roll spins you’ll release the fresh and cleansing scent.
Remove grease stains: Whatever the grease stain is, it can probably be lifted out.  Just act quickly!  Put a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil on the grease stain, gently rub the Essential Oil in to start to break up the grease and place it into the wash.  Be sure to check the clothes when they come out of the wash to make sure that the grease stain is all gone.  If it is, great!  Put it out to dry as normal.  But if a little grease remains, repeat with a few drops of Lemon Essential Oil, rub in and rewash.
Keep your house fresh: Put a few drops of your chosen Essential Oil on clothing pegs and clip them to the underside of all your floor vents. When your heating or air conditioning runs, air will flow over the pegs and your whole house will smell great! Refresh with more drops of Essential Oil as needed!
DIY Aromatherapy tissues: This works for the tall square boxes of tissues as well as the long flat rectangular boxes.  Carefully open the cardboard sides of a tissue box.  Add 2 drops of Essential Oil to each cardboard flap of the tissue box.  Close the flaps and tape shut.  This will infuse all the tissues with the scent (and therapeutic benefits) of the Essential Oil.
DIY Moth Balls: Make your own natural mothballs.  Simply put a few drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil on a few cotton balls and place them in your closet and drawers.  This will keep the moths away and give you great, fresh smelling clothes! Or add a little Cedarwood, Lavender, or Eucalyptus Essential Oil right into the wood shelves in your closet or the drawers in your dresser.
I hope these tips help and I would love to hear your favourite Essential Oil hacks!
Thanks for stopping by, you are so appreciated!
